Raden Ajeng Kartini nasceu em 21 de abril de 1879. Seu pai era Raden Mas Adipati Ario Sosroningrat, que era o regente de Jepara na época. Enquanto isso, sua mãe se chama M.A. Ngasirah, que também é descendente de uma respeitada figura religiosa de Jepara na época, Kyai Haji Madirono. Por ter nascido filho de regente, a vida de Kartini foi materialmente realizada. Ele até conseguiu terminar a escola no ELS (Europese Lagere School).
Ao passo que, naquela época, muitas crianças na idade de Kartini não podiam frequentar a escola. Infelizmente, depois de se casar e dar à luz seu primeiro filho, Kartini morreu em 17 de setembro de 1904 aos 24 anos.
Depois da morte de Kartini, os pensamentos de Kartini sobre as mulheres na Indonésia começaram a se tornar muito assunto. J.H. Abendanon, que na época servia como Ministro da Cultura, Religião e Artesanato das Índias Orientais Holandesas, começou a colecionar cartas que haviam sido escritas por R.A Kartini quando ele mantinha correspondência com seus amigos na Europa. Finalmente, um livro originalmente intitulado 'Door Duisternis tot Licht' foi compilado e posteriormente traduzido como From Darkness to Light, publicado em 1911.
